Trick Question

Three friends shared a meal at a restaruant. Each paid $10 for the meal. The manager realised that he should have charged them only $25 and sent the waiter back to their table with the $5 to repay them. The men could not share the $5 evenly so they told the waiter to keep $2 and they each took $1 back. Hence each man paid only $9 (3 men= $27) and the waiter kept $2 which makes $29.
What happened to the other dollar?

This is a question that I was really stumped on until I read the answer. The answer makes perfect sense.

Speech - The Incredibly Interesting Ideas of Ice-cream

Ice- cream. Who doesn't like it? Whether you like to call it gelato, sundae or hokey pokey, whether your favourite flavour is chocolate, strawberry or mango every one of them is just as delish as the next.

What necessarily is ice-cream? Ice-cream is a frozen dessert made from dairy products such as milk and cream. Usually this is combined with other fruits or flavours to make it taste absolutely scrumptious. For all the times that we eat ice-cream we have got to thank that someone who invented it who is … Now hold on a second. Who really invented the original ice-cream? Well here comes the interesting but very confusing part. No one really knows.

The Greeks and Macedonians say they invented ice-cream because of Alexander the Great. It is said that he brought the technique of using cold pits from his home in Macedonia to Patna in India. Cold pits are holes dug in the ground and filled with snow. They are then covered with great big oak planks. Wine was stored in them for a later refreshment of iced wine.

The Indians say they knew about cold pits long before Alexander invaded, thank you very much. And surprise, surprise. They said they invented it. An ancient Indian dish called kulfi is made from milk that is boiled until it thickens then left to freeze in cold pits.

Then the Chinese once again, say they invented ice-cream. Why? Because they had cold pits going back to around 1100 BC to make the Chinese Emperors dishes of sweetened milk thickened with rice and frozen in porcelain bowls.

Soon enough the Italians come and say they invented the real ice-cream made with cream. Italian cooks who travelled with royals were said to bring ice-cream recipes with them into the French Royal Family. But the French say no! no! no! They say that they already knew about ice-cream long before the Italians arrived. And anyway, they started making real ice-cream with the use of eggs in theirs first. Also the first ice-cream shop ever opened was in France by a gentleman. As the argument goes on the Italians say that even if the first ice-cream shop was opened in France, the guy who opened it was Italian.

There are many more stories but let’s not go there. But then here come the English. They say that they may not have invented ice-cream but they did invent the name . Well there you go. Now, enough about history. Let’s move on to interesting facts. The countries which like ice-cream the most are the United States, New Zealand, Denmark and Australia. The most popular topping is chocolate syrup and the most favourite flavour is classic vanilla. The biggest ice-cream cake was made in China in 2006 and weighed 8 tons. America consumes the most ice-cream in the world with Australians coming second.

So as I come to an end I would like you to think about a few things. Who should we think invented ice-cream, should we eat less ice-cream and what of all flavours is your favourite.

Speech - Weird and Wacky Facts and Figures

Everyone knows that paper is made from trees and that log houses are made from logs but personally I think that it the boring stuff. Some people might know that the mathematical pi never ends and that Thomas Edison was afraid of the dark but this still seems average to me. I want to know unusual things like 200 000 000 M&M’s are sold in the US each day or that, an average person would spend 14 days of their lifetime waiting for the traffic lights to change! That’s 20 160 minutes. These are just some of the weird and wacky facts and figures.

For someone who has a fear of numbers they would have numerophobia. If you have numerophobia please block your ears for you are in for your worst nightmare. For every person in the world there is a chicken or two. There are around 6 billion people in the world and about 10 billion chickens. That would give an endless amount of eggs and a lot of omelettes. I was dreaming of an egg one night. A pure round flawless egg. Then I woke up. I had wondered how many dreams would I have each year and the answer came to me like that, from a book that is. If you are an average person you would have 1 460 dreams a year! This year I have only had about 365 of them. Have you ever felt short of something? Maybe short of eggs or maybe you have felt short of height. Then you would be happy to know that after 2.66543 minutes of searching I have found that an average human being is 14 mm higher when they wake up in the morning so remember to measure your height when you wake up. After all these weird figures let’s move on to wacky facts.

If you are afraid of words then you would have logophobia. I am guessing that if you had logophobia then you would have already fainted by now but if you are afraid of long words then you have a phobia called hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia. Don’t worry. That is the longest word I am using in these three minutes. That is about the biggest word my vocab I can handle but maybe yours is different. A person’s vocabulary can consist of 5 000 to 8 000 words. Try counting them someday. After that you can try rhyming words with month, orange, silver and purple. Actually don’t try because there isn’t a word in the English language that can rhyme with those words. Some strange words in the English language can include lulliloo which means to sing a joyful welcome, liripoop which means a silly person and gongoozler which is someone who stares at something for a long time.

I now hope that everyone knows how many dreams you have in a year and the phobia of really long words oh, and if you ever find a word that rhymes with month, orange, silver or purple please come tell me. I like knowing unusual things.

Trick Question Answer

The problem is the incorrect reasoning. It should be:

Men $3 back

Waiter $2

Meal $25

Total $30 No mystery!

Or another way of looking at it is:

Men actually paid $27 in total - $25 + $2 for waiter.

Poem - My Friends and I

With my friends I have the greatest fun
With my friends I get the job done
When I am lonely they will always be there
A friend is something that is very rare

No matter what we do
There will always be a time when I need you
Whatever situation we are in
Both of us will win

Arguments may happen and we will fight
But we are friends as I write
Without you where would I be?
Together you and I are free

By Slinky

I made this poem last year to reflect on the times with my good friends. I think it says a lot for itself and I am proud of it. When I put it up here, I will never forget it. Hopefully this will pass for homework. :)

We Made The Solar Oven!

This is what it looks like. Myself, Movies and Dogs and Soccer made this today. It will not be exposed to sunlight without the full supervision of the most wonderful science teacher, Ms S. We took the photo with my webcam because the camera doesn't have a memory card. This is why it is sort of blurry.

The Pee Wee AKA the Magpie Lark

The Pee wee is a black and white bird that looks a lot like a magpie but the name can be misleading. Pee wees have no link to magpies or larks. The most noticeable difference in the different species is the fact that the pee wee is smaller than the magpie. Whether their looks are similar, the peewee is a very interesting bird.

Description

As I have said before, the pee wee is a black and white bird. The adult male has a white eyebrow and a black face whereas the female has a white face and doesn't have a eyebrow. The young, no matter what gender, have a black forehead, a white eyebrow and a white throat.

Habitat

Pee wees can be found in Australia, New Guinea and Timor. They can be found in almost any habitat except rain forests and the driest deserts. The birds that don't breed and young birds make large wandering groups that move together depending on which season. These groups can sometimes consist of several thousands.

Food

The bird is a mostly ground dwelling animal and can be seen slowly searching the ground for a variety of insects and their larvae. They also like to eat worms and freshwater invertebrate.

From my perspective, this bird does not at all sound like the noisy magpies but yet, does not sound as sweet as the lark but I like to think that they are there, having a peaceful time as they fly, eat and enjoy life.

Wind Power

Using the wind as a source of energy has been around for a long time. You might of seen a windmill on a farm. When the blades turn, it rotates a turbine inside a small generator to produce energy. You can make one too by following these instructions.

Materials
the template on the right
scissors
a toothpick
a straw
sticky tape

Instructions
  1. Cut out the template.
  2. Decorate it
  3. From the corners of the square cut until you reach the line
  4. At every dot, fold it into the middle
  5. Sticky tape them there
  6. Cut your toothpick in half
  7. Poke a hole big enough at the top of the straw to put your toothpick in
  8. Put your thumbtack or split pin in. Make sure that paper is not touching the straw
  9. There you have it! Now blow directly at the front

Note that this is something that I have tested out and I have made by mixing different instructions together. I anything goes wrong, I am to blame.

Solar Power

Solar is the Latin word for sun so the word suggests that is is sun power. The sun is a powerful source of energy and with it, it can be turned into energy. We use the sun in two different ways. It can be used as a heat source or as a energy source.

People have used the sun for thousands of years. Greek people used to build their houses towards the sun so that their house would be warmer. In the 1830's, a explorer named John Herschel used a solar oven to cook his food during his adventure in Africa. Here is the hyperlink on how to make it. Trust me. It is so simple.

To generate your home with solar power you have to use a lot of panels. Just look at this photo!

The whole roof is covered! I was really surprised.

A process known as photovoltaics, is what we do to make energy out of the sun. So if you have a solar powered watch or calculator, you are using photovoltaics.

In 1954, some scientists discovered that silicon made a electrical charge when it was put in the sunlight. A few years later, silicon chips were used to help power space satellites. Funnily enough, silicon is a substance found in sand!

A lot of people use solar energy as part of their electricity. From just one ton of sand we could produce enough energy to burn 500,00 tons of coal.

Some of you might be wondering why we all don't use solar panels and solar energy. With the energy from the sun, it makes a different energy than the one from a power station. Due to this, you need different wiring done and that isn't the cheapest thing...

Although it costs a lot, I think that it is a good way to save the environment and I think that the actual solar energy isn't as expensive as normal energy!

Poem - Two Drops of Rain

These are my two drops of rain
Waiting on the window-pane.
I am waiting here to see
Which the winning one will be.
Both of them have different names.
One is John and one is James.
All the best and all the worst
Comes from which of them is first.
James has just begun to ooze.
He's the one I want to lose.
John is waiting to begin.
He's the one I want to win.
James is going slowly on.
Something sort of sticks to John.
John is moving off at last.
James is going pretty fast.
John is rushing down the pane.
James is going slow again.
James has met a sort of smear.
John is getting very near.
Is he going fast enough?
(James has found a piece of fluff.)
John has quickly hurried by.
(James was talking to a fly.)
John is there, and John has won!
Look! I told you!
Here's the sun!

By A.A. Milne

By the looks of things, this is a child who is bored by the rain and is looking at two raindrops on their window. One is James and one in John. The child is giving these characters personification by making them sound as if they are running. A the end of the poem John has won but they totally forget about it and realise they can go out and play.

I found this poem very enjoyable to read because of the simple English and the funny topic.
